Staff are as important as new buildings – vote YES to strike action on pay

One of the best attended UCU meetings for some years heard UCU National HE Officer tell members that universities in the UK are sitting on over £1 billion in surpluses. Bath alone had a surplus of over £10 million last year and this is expected to rise to £13 million this year. ‘We need to invest in staff as well as shiny new buildings’ he argued as members were urged to support the call for action against the fifth annual pay cut in a row. Pay is down. Job security is disappearing for more and more in HE. And now the VC wants to cut the successful PGCE course.

Minister questions Bath PGCE closure plan

“I would rather keep providers like Bath in the system,” Schools Minister David Laws told the House of Commons Select Committee on Education on 11th September. Several MPs questioned Bath’s proposal to close its teacher training course. The Minister confirmed that it was never the intention of the Government’s new arrangements for teacher training that high quality providers such as Bath should respond by withdrawing their longstanding partnerships with local schools. His remarks reinforce the view that Bath has hit the panic button while other universities sit tight. (more…)
