New plan for North car park brings fresh objections

Members raised concerns last summer about the impact of a proposed new car park.  The University’s planning application was withdrawn, but a new planning application has been submitted and once again concerns have been raised.  For a summary of the objections

The University have submitted a new application for planning permission for the huge new levelled car park behind the student residences and abutting the footpath on the North of the campus.  This is despite having received over 150 objections to the previous planning application.  This campaign was successful in that that planning application was withdrawn in December but this subsequent application was submitted practically the same day as the other was withdrawn.  The difference is that the 150+ objectors were not notified of the resubmission, and only one statutory notice has been put up next to Polden Court walkway, not next to the land on which the car park is to be built.  Moreover, the car park is practically identical (some 30 spaces smaller and with a different access road but on the same site).  In proposing going ahead with building this car park on this greenfield site, the University has ignored suggestions (including from the Council) that other carparks could be expanded into multi-storey car parks, should there be a need for more staff car parking spaces.

The deadline for comments and objections is 11th February.
