Use of metrics in research assessment

A HEFCE consultation is underway on the potential use of metrics in research assessment. This is a potentially very damaging development for multiple reasons. REF survey highlights widespread concerns

UCU has published a report based on around 7000 responses to a survey carried out in the summer.   Responses were received from staff across academic grades and in 153 Higher Education institutions (HEIs), demonstrating the strength of feeling on the REF among academic staff in the UK. (more…)

Open Access Policy, Academic Freedom and REF – ‘Pay to Say’

REF Code of Practice – need for vigilance on ‘no detriment’ statement

UCU has been in talks with senior university managers about the recently published REF code of practice.    The talks ended without agreement.   UCU members are advised to keep a close eye on how the COP is applied by Heads of Department and others … (more…)
