Below is correspondence between Bath UCU and University of Sheffield UCU. Our branch donated £500 to their hardship fund.

Dear comrades,

I’m writing to you on behalf of Sheffield UCU, which on 17 November will commence 16 days (across four weeks) of strike action against University of Sheffield management over compulsory redundancies, job losses, and unsustainable workload pressures.

We are writing to UCU branches, other Sheffield trades unions, and fellow-travellers to ask for a monetary donation to support our Solidarity Fund, which compensates members for losses arising from strike deduction (and which supplements UCU’s national fighting fund, which will only cover eight days of our strike). To win this dispute we know that we may need to stay on strike for a long period, and to enable our members to do so we need to ensure we have the financial resources to support them.

We would welcome any donation that your branch can offer to support this.

We know many other branches are in local action themselves, and so may not be in a position to support us financially, and we send our solidarity. Accordingly, we would also welcome opportunities for non-financial solidarity between our branches. On behalf of the University of Bath UCU branch, we would like to respond to your call for financial support and to offer our solidarity to all members of your branch in your dispute with university management over the devastating round of redundancies that has been proposed. Our branch recently passed a motion without opposition to extend our solidarity and financial support to all UCUbranches requesting this, and in line with this motion we are donating £500 to your hardship fund. All of us from Bath UCU wish you strength and courage in your struggle against your management. Know that you have the support of UCU members across the UK: an injury to one is an injury to us all.
