Submitted by UCU Bath Branch Committee
‘You may have seen reports concerning individuals at a number of UK universities who are facing criticism or dismissal (and in some cases, worse) relating to their work in contentious areas. Some of these have involved very public arguments in which HE staff and/or union branches have found themselves divided as to the merits of the case. You may be wondering what the union’s role or position would be if a similar case happened at Bath.
On any issue, academic or political, people acting in good faith can hold a wide range of views and can disagree strongly on many things. Members of our branch, and of its committee, hold a range of views but as trade unionists, we do not disagree on the basic principle of fair play.
Collectively, Bath UCU holds the principle that all workers are entitled to fair process and should only ever face dismissal or disciplinary action on the basis of grounds properly established in a properly run disciplinary procedure. This holds no matter what allegation might be made, and no matter what criticism a member might face. In particular, this means that every member is entitled to union representation and support during a disciplinary or grievance process.
Where a member is facing formal or informal action, this principle stands, whatever might be the views in question. A basic role of any trade union is to make an employer behave correctly and lawfully, and this applies whatever the circumstances.
In short, Bath UCU will support every member who needs representation and assistance.’
