Bath branch unites to defend USS as a defined benefits pension scheme

A well attended branch meeting on 11 September agreed to send a strong message to next week’s delegate conference on the future of the USS pension scheme. There were different points of view in the meeting but everyone was agreed on the need to defend one of the last remaining defined benefits pension schemes in the country. A rise in your pay, an attack on your pension – we need to build the union

This week all university staff will see their pay increase by 2% as a result of the joint industrial action taken by UCU, UNISON and Unite members earlier this year. The increase barely allows us to keep pace with inflation, and does nothing to make up for the last five years of wage cuts, but there is no doubt that without our sustained action we would have seen a substantially worse offer, and yet another cut in real-terms pay
